 The Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design (IUSD) is an International Programme at Ain Shams University. IUSD was established in 2011 as a platform for interdisciplinary research and design on integrated sustainable approaches of landscapes, cities and buildings. IUSD Research Platform consists of: IUSD – MSc Programme, IUSD – PhD Programme and; IUSD – Professional Training. The interlinked programmes create the environment for IUSD – Lab Cairo.
IUSD MSc programme Â
IUSD Master in Science Programme was established in 2011 in collaboration with the University of Stuttgart (USTUTT), Germany. IUSD trains and prepares a new generation of urban practitioners to face the tremendous environmental, cultural, socio-economic and governance challenges resulting from the dynamic urban transformation around the globe.
IUSD philosophy is based on transnational learning exchange between students with different regional backgrounds applied to a specific urban reality. Teaching is based on interdisciplinary teamwork and on site-specific projects in cooperation with local communities and with different stakeholders, organizations and institutions, locally and internationally.
IUSD Lab – Cairo works with various European, Arab and African partners on research projects, with focus on integrated sustainable development. Our key research themes are: Integrated development approaches in metropolitan, remote and rural areas; ecological planning and design and; informal areas development.
IUSD – Lab Cairo together with IUSD – MSc Programme organises various activities such as Student Workshops and Summer Schools; IUSD Salons and Lectures and; Strategic Workshops and Symposia.
- IUSD Cairo Program: Two years taught at ASU with a potential opportunity of exchange in the second year for IUSD double degree (based on self-finance). Furthermore, IUSD-ASU students could have opportunities for exchange with one of the international partner universities.

- IUSD Double degree Program: One year taught at University of Stuttgart in Germany and the other year at Ain Shams University in Egypt.
Current Funding Opportunities
- EPOS Scholarship for IUSD Double MSc Degree
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers a limited number of scholarships for applicants wide range of countries (see DAC-List) to obtain a Double degree at the University of Stuttgart and Ain Shams University (with the first year taught in Stuttgart and the second year taught in Cairo). These scholarships are available through the EPOS Funding scheme “Development-Related Postgraduate Coursesâ€. Only applicants who fulfill the formal requirements of the EPOS program and who apply at both University of Stuttgart and Ain Shams University can apply for this scholarship for double degree. The scholarships cover the entire duration of the course (including travel costs to both countries).
- Erasmus+ Student Exchange
Students enrolled at ASU have the opportunity to benefit from Erasmus+ programme to travel for a One-Semester Exchange at University of Stuttgart during their third semester. Students will be offered travel allowance and monthly stipend for a period up to 6 months.

Who can apply?
Applicants from all over the world with an internationally recognized Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Regional Planning or Civil Engineering. Professionals with Bachelor degrees in Geography, Sociology, Environmental Management, Political Science or Economics and Cultural Studies, Arabic, African or Islamic Studies with relevant professional experience will also be considered but should also provide proof of relevant professional experience in fields related to architecture, urban and development planning or infrastructure design.
The Masters programs strongly encourages applications from young professionals working in public institutions, private sector, civil society initiatives or NGOs all over the world who are interested in IUSD-related topics and who have a high level of interest in knowledge transfer and achieving a social benefit.
The Admission Commission will give applicants with work expertise or equivalent internship experience preferential treatment. We would welcome applicants from many different backgrounds and countries.
The programs aim at bringing together young professionals with experience and maturity, who are willing to tackle new challenges, be integrative and open-minded in their approach to problem solving. Prospective students need to be able to recognize and embrace the vast scope of subject matters covered by the program, from the scale of ecosystems to constructional architectural detail, and consider this a special quality and an important asset to their professional and personal skills.Â
